How Do I Know if My Old Flooring is Asbestos Tiles? The only way to know for sure is by having the tiles professionally tested. But there are a few things to look for that will increase the likelihood the tiles are asbestos containing materials (ACM) . First, if the tiles look like these in the photo above and are 9 inches square, they likely contain asbestos. If the floor tiles are loose or broken and you can see a black or brown mastic they are more likely to contain asbestos.

Other flooring that may contain asbestos includes linoleum, 12 in or other vinyl tiles, porcelain tiles, and any other non-natural stone tile. We have even found it in the fibers of cement tile backer boards.
As stated above many glues and mastics contain asbestos.

Finally, it is important to remember there is not a ban on all asbestos products. You can still purchase asbestos products at your local big box or automotive parts store. Call us for more details or to schedule an appointment.
